Why study I/O Psychology?

Industrial/Organizational Psychology is an applied, interdisciplinary subfield. All too often, people do not discover I/O Psychology until after they’ve graduated from college and have started working… only then, do they become intimately familiar with the challenges of work, organizations, and teams.

I/O Psychology is the application of psychological science to work. It can help answer critical questions such as:

  • How can my organization improve employee motivation?

  • Why aren’t employees staying at our company?

  • How can we find and hire the best people?

  • What support do our employees need to succeed?

  • How can we shift our organization’s culture?

  • How can we develop effective leaders?

  • How do we manage intra-organizational conflict?

I/O Psychology is a growing field, which is especially relevant following rapid changes to the nature of work in a “post-COVID” world. I/O Psych can help answer organizational questions about the future of work, such as:

  • What does remote/hybrid work mean for my organization?

  • What does additional flexibility mean to my employees?

  • Is the 9-5 Mon-Fri work week really the best practice?

Careers in I/O Psychology are exciting and varied. It’s actually hard to answer the question, “What can I do with a graduate degree in I/O Psychology?” because the options are so limitless. Common areas of practice include:

  • Consulting

  • Organizational Development

  • Executive Coaching

  • Strategic Human Resources

  • Training

  • Program Evaluation

  • Selection and Placement

Our program is ideal for a diverse pool of students - those who are starting their journey into I/O Psychology right after completing their undergraduate degree, as well as those who are early- or mid-career and are looking to pivot or advance in their work.
